Trinity’s Annual Retreat is Feb 27th-Mar 1st, 2026
Pastor Heidi Torgerson (she/her) leads from a bold passion for the ways the liberating love of Jesus takes shape in people’s lives and in the world. She also happens to believe that joy is one of God’s most underrated survival skills! Pastor Heidi currently serves as Lead Pastor at Grace Lutheran Church of LaGrange and is known for thoughtful preaching, deep listening, and creating a wide welcome for skeptics and the disaffected. Her ministry has been shaped by 15 years of service to the global church and among young adults, beginning as a missionary in Mexico. She comes to this retreat not as an expert with all the answers, but as a fellow traveler who trusts that joy can be practiced, reclaimed, and shared – even (especially) in hard times.
Pastor Heidi grew up in (very) small-town North Dakota and is a graduate of Luther College (Iowa) and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. She is married to Jason Anderson, a Lutheran pastor who originally hails from Canada. Their blended, tri-national, bilingual family includes three amazing kids and one cute dog. Because all three kids share half-Scandinavian, half-Mexican heritage, their parents sometimes refer to them as “the Norwexicans.” It only seems fitting.
Joy That Holds: Resistance, Renewal, and the Reign of God
In a world shaped by exhaustion, injustice, and endless urgency, joy can feel optional – or even irresponsible. This retreat invites us to reclaim joy as a faithful, defiant practice that sustains us for the long work of love. Grounded in Scripture, Lutheran theology, and lived experience, we’ll explore joy not as fleeting happiness or spiritual bypassing, but as deep, resilient trust in God’s promises. Together we’ll reflect, pray, laugh, tell the truth, and practice joy as critical fuel for the ongoing work of justice, mercy, and healing.
We will provide programming and child care on Saturday morning as we delve into our topic. There is plenty of time for fellowship and free time. Check out the website for the Abbey to see the amenities available in addition to our programming.
