The Transition to Bishop Begins

On Sunday, July 26, Pastor Erik Christensen was released from his call to Trinity with joyful thanksgiving as he begins the transition to preparing for his six‑year term as bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod (MCS).

The MCS is one of 65 synods in the ELCA and includes 148 congregations and nine Synod Authorized Worshiping Communities across Cook, DuPage, Kane, and Lake counties. With more than 60,000 baptized members, the synod brings together urban and suburban ministries united by a shared mission: to proclaim the gospel, make disciples, and do justice in Jesus’ name.

Pastor Erik’s installation as bishop will take place on Saturday, September 19, at 3:00 PM at St. James Cathedral in downtown Chicago. A reception will follow the service.

This special liturgy will be led by ELCA Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry, who will preach and preside. Bishop Christensen will preside at the table. Music will be directed by Dr. Keith Hampton of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, with an installation choir open to participants from congregations across the synod.
