On Sunday, September 27, join Philip McPeek, Director of Music and Worship, during the Adult Forum time at 11:00 AM.
There was a time when church musicians and preachers alike were expected to compose in the moment, and when the training for that was ordinary rather than exotic. It rested on an older understanding of memory — not as recall, but as the workshop where material is gathered and arranged until you can build with it. This session looks at what that craft required, how it was taught, and what happened to it when print made it optional. It closes with a question about our own moment: as we hand more of the arranging over to our machines, what does invention still ask of us? We'll start at the keyboard, but no musical background is needed.
