Foods Resource Bank (FRB) is a relatively new "Christian Response
to World Hunger;" a non-government humanitarian organization committed
providing food security in the developing world through sustainable
small-scale agricultural production, and it does so in a unique way.
The Food Resource Bank facilitates sustainable food production in
impoverished areas worldwide. 100 percent of funds raised are used
to develop irrigation and other resources required to help those in
need help themselves through sustainable food production. The funds
are raised by selling crops produced through a unique collaboration
between city and country churches.
In our case, Trinity partners with Stavanger Lutheran Church near
Morris, Illinois. Stavanger contributes the land, labor and machinery.
Trinity provides the seed, fertilizer, gasoline, and other inputs by
"selling" at least 40 acres of land to our members and other friends to
raise money. Each acre sells for approximately $270, so we expect to
contribute at least $10,800. This amount is doubled through dollar-for-
dollar matching with an agency of the US Government, and additional matching
is available through Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Last year the money
was used for irrigation in India.
This year the season culminated with the Harvest Festival at Stavanger
on October 23rd. We provided bus transportation from Trinity to an
outdoor worship service at Stavanger Lutheran Church followed by interesting
farm activities, and the chance to ride in a $300,000 combine! We invite
everyone to participate in next year's Food Resource Bank project.
